Here is the deal..Drill a small hole in the "nubs" sticking out from the nut and weld through those holes..You may wish to try McMaster Carr as they may have that sort of captive nut with the holes already drilled..
Go to McMaster Carr website and search for nut plates and the various designs show up.. Sam
