Welder wiring questions
Hello all,

I have a quick(hopefully) question about my garage wiring related to using my welder. I just purchased a 120V MIG welder that needs a 20A circuit. Currently, my detached garage is fed by 10-2 buried wire. It has a 30A breaker on the main house panel. The garage has a small 2 breaker center with two 15A breakers. One 15A breaker controls all wall receptacles and the first receptacle in the line is GFI. The other 15A circuit goes to a series of outlets on the ceiling that supply shop lights(6 2-bulb fluorescent fixtures) and garage door opener. I'm not sure what size wire is on the 15A circuits, but I do have a bunch of 12-2 I could use. What is the best(and not too expensive hopefully) way to get a 20A circuit for my welder?

Thanks for any help....and FINALLY...I got a welder to start some body work!!! 01-08-2007 10:22 PM

If your shop is wired w/ 12ga, go ahead and upgrade your breakers to 20A. If not, run a dedicated 12ga circuit to your welder and get some half-height breakers (two breakers duplexed into a single breaker body) and run 15A to your existing circuits and 20A for the welder. Make that a 10ga wire and 30A breaker for an unforseen new tool.
