Yeah....the burn from welding is not fun, my eyes were fine in about 24 hrs but it will NEVER happen again. It is a hard lesson but one that you will only have to learn once.

I spent some time in India, working, welding, and we saw these guys all the time in their shops. I needed a slag hammer and even though the ones I bought kind of looked proper, they we made from mild steel and hammered into shape, lol they didn't last long. Also we were on the coast, and it rained, but the way to adjust the amperage on the only rental, portable welding machine, was by moving the stinger lead up to the next bolt there were 10 or so sticking out of the front and they were uncovered. That damn thing shocked us so many times.
Most of the guys we saw stick welded, no mig or tig, and they had there weld shield, a good size piece of whatever from cardboard to siding with a hood glass in it, or cutting goggles screwed to it. and no gloves and flip flops. We had a guy, Indian, who was our helper and always had his flip flops on while we were wearing steel toed boots, big maritime metal stuff, by the way, 1/2 " minimum, and we tried to get him some shoes at the market, they looked like a pair of Hi-tech(brand) hikers, best we could do, but they were about as good as the hammers, once he got them wet, the very first time, they fell apart. So he was stuck with his flip flops. They pull of some pretty good stuff with what i consider antiquated equipment, WWII era , British non-the less, Oh our portable was powered by a diesel Enfeild motorcycle motor. late 50's early 60's, the job was in '99. |

Also reminds me of my first job in AZ at a steel fab shop One torch for 30 guys Need less to say I did not stay long. Nor did the company! I've done a number of start up companies and it look the same every time. tools cost money but I can work all I want for free! Craig |

QMG! Thanks for the flash back! I have done work in Mexico just across the border In Nogales. Got the crap shock out of me for a miss wirered welder running though the ground. The best part was it was an American company Stuck in the past. Next time you buy a Sear garage door opener! You now know where there made! Craig |

Look closer at the picture. To the right of the guy is some welding leads taped together with red tape. I am fairly certain he is arc welding.

------------------------------------------------------------- Look at the age of the thread! $50 says he is dead by now, if he welds like that on a daily basis. |

302, I think those are hoses and if you look closely at his right you can see the valve, apparently brass, of a torch handle also he looks as if he is holding a welding rod and feeding it into the weld with his left hand which would be normal for a gas weld.

You might be right, but something else caught my eye. The light given off by the welding is bright like it's an arc, not like from a flame.......just a thought. I also agree with Barry, he is probably either dead or blind by now.

All I see is a poor old guy scraping a meager living without much of anything to work with, not even a bench. Then we have to listen to the POS movie stars, celebs, and rich folk whining about their "problems"

F&J, Exactly what I have thought ever since this was first posted. Look at the quality of the work these guys do with what they have to work with and it is nothing short of amazing, my hat is off to that guy.

My feelings exactly. It also points out that SKILLS are much more important that fancy tools! Brian |

I don't want to seem like some sort of expert, but what he is doing is definitely not electric arc. I have been a professional welding instructor for ten years. The light would be blue or possibly white if he was using electricity. It is some sort of fuel gas welding. His left hand is feeding some sort of filler material and the sparks are from the fusion. Just my opinion. I guess at wherever he works, safety is a non factor.

Ya i agree non-electric we tried to reproduce it by using oxy-acc and had no luck. We think he is using some small mud rod which we didn't have on hand we tried, 6011, 7018, and this old 303 filler , got close but not quite. Was suggested it could be some type of brazing rod.
