Welding Question?? Scratch Start??

Hi guy's I have been fallowing the DIY Tig welder thread by Travis. I can weld with and own both Stick and Mig, but know nothing about Tig other than what I have read or hear, a good friend states he can weld very well with Tig and thats all he talks about when it comes to welding. (he did this at his work place, time will tell if he's that good. He's not that good with a Mig). But anyway this is my question

What does it mean when you scratch start (with a Tig) the weld? Is it like a stick welder where you kind of scratch to start the arc? or something else? Please explain. And if it is not scratch start what other start are they? Does this Tig machine that Travis is building with all of us use a scratch start or something else? What start method is the best for tig?

As always thanks for the great answers.

Steve
