Welding Wire Good Or Bad????

Hi Guys,

I have an 8" spool of Hobart .024 solid wire. It has been in my dry garage for 8 years. It's still in the original box never opened.

Will is still be good? Thanks

Dave

Should be unless it has gotten corroded somehow..

Yup...and even if it was left unwrapped, many times you can spool off the top couple of layers and the wire underneath will be ok. Just don't spool it off through the gun or you'll be replacing the liner in the hose.

Sure it will be fine as long as it is not rusted. A cored wire OTOH may not fair so well as it can absorb a lot of moisture into the flux material core and cause serious problems. This can happen even if the exterior of the wire appears ok but unless rust is obvious solid wire does not have this problem.

Another note on the cored type wires, if they are causing problems due to moisture being absorbed into them then drying in an oven may or may not solve the problem. If problems such as porosity are still apparent even after drying then the wire must be scraped, it's wise to scrap it anyway and not even bother trying to dry it if it is to be used for anything critical. Again none of that will be a problem with clean solid wire, it will last forever as long as it is not allowed to rust.
