I think I'd start with 1500 and then go to 2000. That will cut a little less and will tend to keep you from going too far.

I really couldn't get any good pics from the garage then it started to rain, I home to back it out sometime today.
Bob, I used 3 coats of red urethane. Although I am sure some spots have two. I was tempted to do a fourth but the P sheet called for two, so I thought three was a good compromise. |

That P sheet doesn't take into account color sanding and buffing.
If you have a lot of orange peel like you say, I would be afraid of sanding through in spots if you try to sand all of it out. |
