What a Bugger!

My 'ol dad bought him an old Beetle yesterday on eBay.Pretty kewl. It's a 1970.Looks like a bumble bee to me lol. It's black with a yellow racing stripe down the center lol.Anyway, funny thing is,it's got Corvette Rally wheels on it.Looks cool to me.Probably rubs the fenders though when you hit a good bump.Gonna be fun to drive.Needs a little bit of work here and there. He got it for $2,000.Me and my step mom are going to get it next weekend in Knoxville with his Ranger. It's about a 5-6 hour trip from here. All interstate I reckon.Probably get started about 6:00 Saturday morning and get back a little after dark if everything goes smooth. We've reserved a U-Haul Tow Dolly there in Knoxville,so we're gonna pick it up,go to his place, get the Bug,and then head back. We're turning the dolly in up town. That's the easiest way to do it instead of renting the dolly here and wagging it up there empty. No sense in that lol.

This'll be my second run for a vehicle with his 2000 Ranger. We went last year and got my Ranger in Tullahoma and I drove to there and back with it.A very fun experience.Alot different than pulling 5x8 trailers and such lol. This time,we'll be going up there and we'll be on the interstate with that dude.Probably cruise about 60-65 to be safe.I think we're gonna put the rears of the Bug on the dolly so we are sure that we don't tear the gearbox or transaxles out of it.I don't think that it would hurt it to pull it the other way,but I would hate to tear it up before he even gets to drive it lol.

For you dudes who have or have had Bugs in the past, how do you get the 4 speed transmission into reverse? My step mom doesn't know anything about it and I'm gonna test drive it when we get there.I'm sure the owner can show us.Probably look stupid on us though lol. It's got something to do with pushing the shifter down towards the ground and going somewhere ??I forget.Dad used to know, but he forgot also lol.

He owned a bunch of those little Buggers back in the 70's.I reckon that was their hey-day.They seem to be getting popular again though.I really wouldn't mind finding an old junker Bug,building a tube frame for it,and stuff a small block Ford under the FRONT hood .That would be fun.Alot of work, but fun.

Oh well...Wish us luck on our journey.I'll take tons of pics along the way to share with you guys when we get back .

Push down on the shifter and then to the right and then to the rear, if memory serves.

my mom just bought a '68 last week. it's a fun little car, had to change the clutch before it could be driven though, only 4 bolts hold the engine to the transaxle, once they are out it pretty much falls down.

reverse-push down on it and pull down to the left of second, i don't know if they all are the same, i think they are though.
