What Burns Out A Coil?

I am on my third MSD coil in a year, second in three months. To make a long story short, my engine went nuts today. Felt like I was hit by Anti Aircraft Fire! The tach went nuts and the vac gauge went from 15 to 5 to 15 to 5 to 15 etc. Less than five minutes after it quit, I restarted and it ran basically fine but not great. I switched over to my back-up coil, coil #3, and it now runs normal! Is my Eccel distributor killing my coils?

Could be the ignition switch or a bad plug wire can cause it also.JMO

Do you have it wired to a full 12 volts? It should have a resistor circuit that cuts the voltage down to about 9 volts when in "run" and a by-pass circuit that supplies full voltage only during cranking.
