There are some cheaper ways to go with a stack injection efi-look here:

Essentially, it comes down to the manifold-Hilborn only sells them as a kit (using FAST xfi 2.0), whereas Enderle now sells a pre-made manifold efi ready (to select dealers)-that is the route most of these guys use, and the biggest cost is generally the ecu-fox uses megasquirt, force likes the new Holley dominator xfi, and Kevin Thompson is a FAST dealer-

The Kinsler guys are nuts-they are at least 30-40% more than anyone else, and have an attitude to boot-

As far as running a mfi, I've heard of guys using a dial-a-jet to get them to work, but even then it's a compromise-it's very difficult to get one to work in all situations-either it's good wfo, or it idles well but has a problem at tip-in-
