what can i expect from mechanical fuel injection on a 302/347 ford

I have a 2000 302 ford that I was planning on stroking out to a 347 and putting it in a 1966 ford f-100 4x2. I want to put a mechanical fuel injection system on it from hilborn. I'm wondering what can i expect in terms of power from bottom to top. I've heard that you dont get great gas mileage with them and i want to drive the truck often in the summer is there a way to get ok mileage with them. I'd be greatful to get any opinions or personal experiance with them.

I don`t know what the laws are in Montana, but it says on Hilborns site not legal for street use and they do not recommend it for street use.
I would use a factory system that`s been reflashed.

You can probably expect a PITA trying to run it on the street. Not saying it can't be done but the mech FI is a race set up. This is why Hilborn also has a look-a-like electronic FI set up. Did you look at their web site?? lots of info. www.hilborninjection.com or call them, 1 (949) 360-0909

Man, nobody runs mechanical fuel injection anymore. They are the worst kind of compromise. The "pill" that is good for high rpm running is lousy for idle and low rpm running and vice-versa. People nowadays retrofit them with electronics. Have the nostalgia look without the PITA of mechanical.

fuel injection

Don't even think about running it on the street!!!! It's strickly a race only set-up and is crude by any standard. I've tuned several over the years but wouldn't have one on the street if the system was a gift.

I've also converted 2 Hilborn stack systems to computer control and they were a headache. Run the stock system and have someone tune it.

I put a Hilborn system on a SBC (327), but the system I used was their EFI conversion that uses the same throttle bodies as their mechanical FI. This was a money-no-object project and we still could never get it to run as strongly and reliably as if it just had a single 4 barrel. It does look and sound pretty cool, but to get it run reasonably well we had to get rid of their Carbine ECU and replace it with a FAST XFI, Make a lower plenum, install an IAC, make all new throttle plates that actually fit the bores, add an IAT sensor in one of the stacks, etc, etc...

It runs pretty good now, but we could never get more than about 250 hp out of it.....which in this case works out to be about $80 per HP.

We ran one on a flat head Ford rail, it required hand priming to start, a dedicated fuel pump, lines and tank including the "pill" jet that sits in the return line to the tank. Our barrel valve was a rudimentary affair that was a bit problematic, but it's just another requirement (allows idle). And you need the ability to tune it. The "street manners" of this deal were basically non existent, and to run one on a regular basis on the street would have been a total misery.

These days, though there's nothing that cannot be done, given enough effort and cash. But I'd (instead of REAL mech. FI) go w/the look, w/o the hassle and get a converted (or new) set up that looks mechanical but is actually EFI. The one below is from http://www.inglese.com/, there are others as well. Ant length stacks can be used and there are many styles.

Essentially, it comes down to the manifold-Hilborn only sells them as a kit (using FAST xfi 2.0), whereas Enderle now sells a pre-made manifold efi ready (to select dealers)-that is the route most of these guys use, and the biggest cost is generally the ecu-fox uses megasquirt, force likes the new Holley dominator xfi, and Kevin Thompson is a FAST dealer-

The Kinsler guys are nuts-they are at least 30-40% more than anyone else, and have an attitude to boot-

As far as running a mfi, I've heard of guys using a dial-a-jet to get them to work, but even then it's a compromise-it's very difficult to get one to work in all situations-either it's good wfo, or it idles well but has a problem at tip-in-

Hi All. I have been running an Enderle set up for about fourteen years. I have refined it to be very reliable and a pleasure to drive. Here is a link to my blog were I enplane what changes to the system that I made.
