What cars shold I be looking at in the boneyard to souce the rims?
My ride uses a '73 Chevy Impala (B-body)chassis and suspension. I've replaced all the bushings with polyurethane and added front and rear anti-roll bars; the car rides and handles well.
My problem is with the tires and wheels. The tires are Denman classic IV G78-15 bias-ly wide whites (3-1/2") that are in good shape visually (only a few thousand miles on them), but are 25 years old. The wheels are chromed wire wheels, measure 8" edge to edge, so 15x7's (?) with the mounting face 3-12' from the inner edge and a 5x5 bolt pattern. (What offset was stock for an Impala?)
While I like the wires, I hate the upkeep and these have a lot of surface rust, so I'm thinking of going with steel rims and Starburst moon discs. Tires will be wide whitewall radials with a lower profile that the G78's. Part of the reason the tires need to move inward is that he front-end nees to come down.
My problem is that the tires protrude too far to the outside in the front (fine in the back), and measurements show I can move the tire and additional 1" inboard from where it is now which I think may solve my problem.
What cars shold I be looking at in the boneyard to souce the rims? And any advice and opinions are welcomed while I'm making up my mind.
