What caused this?

I was setting the compression for TDC yesterday and so i took of my rotor and plugs. As i cranked the motor, it still started and wouldn't shut off. My ground wire to the block fried and so did the positive battery cable. I finally unhooked my negative cable to battery and it shut off. Any idea to why it still cranked over and ran? I was thinking my starter solenoid is messed up and that it was telling the motor to start. Also what else might of fried in the engine? It ran for a good minute til I could shut it off. Tnx for any replies.

you took off your rotor and plugs? plug wires or the spark plugs themself. I could see it happening with spark plugs in the motor, but not with them out...

No plug wires=NO Spark / NO START.

The ignition might have stuck when you cranked it and kept turning the starter over but without plug wires and rotor there is no way possible for it to start and run. The starter stuck and was pulling current hence the reason for the hot wires.
