I am going to start putting my 350 chevy together and i am reading for the second time David Vizard's "how to rebuild your small block chevy" and it does not tell to check clearances on rod to crank after both rods are on rod journal of crank.It also does not show how far down in bore compression rings should be when checking ring gap.I think in the picture it shows ring gap being checked at top of bore i guess it should be the same throughout bore if machine work was done right.

on clearences, anything under .001 is not enough, anything over .003 is too much, just use your piston up side down without the rings on it, push the ring about a inch down in the bore.

my book said to check them at differant spots in the cylinder.where there at the closest point file them to fit there.
