what could it be?

Took off from a light and experienced some wheel hop. Didn't let off the gass and heard a bang. Rear wheels won't do a thing when I put the car in gear. I can come off the clutch get out of the truck and listen to something spinning in the axle shaft from the drivers side.

I had to pull it home. After a mile or so I start hearing some nasty grinding. It got worst the further we went. When I got home I could smell fluid burning. I just changed the fluid 8 mos ago. I have seen no leaks?

I've replaced everything on the truck just not the rear end.
I don't race it to much, it's really my boat puller. Any advice on a new rear end? It's a 81 chevy el camino, mod 350, 4 speed manual trans. How's the junk yard as far as complete units?

Well, you are replacing the rear now. You blew the pinion gear.

Where should I buy one from?
I've been looking on the net just in case but haven't come across many.

If its your daily driver, try your local auto recycler.

An axle?
That's what I thought at first. I'm going to pull the cover and make sure it's nothing inside. After I check that axle. I hope that's all it is!

Not just an axle...

Axles seem fine. Opened the cover and found the two springs and a gear broken in half from the posi. I like my posi, it's my daily driver/boat puller. Should I take a chance rebuilding or try the salvage yard?
Any numbers on a posi rear that may work with my 81 el camino?
