Iknow very lttle about the stovebolts,,I didn't know the heads were interchangeable,i wouldn't mind having a 250 or 292 with early head and valve cover for my 50 chevy pu.

I am not sure if that can be done. 53 may have been a transition year. I just know they use a valve cover like a 48-52 even though they are full oil pressure. The straight shift in 53 was still a splash lube even though the Powerglide was full oil pressure.

Whether or not the 53 head will fit a later model block or not, I just don't know.

The engine I have I think is a 49 so it would have babitted rods and no pressure feed ,it is a fresh build but I am not going to use it,\it came out of a car then was built.

I really doubt you would be satisfied with it. If I know you, it needs to be able to run the highway at 65-70 without burning up. No matter how fresh, it is still obsolete technoligy.

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, but AFAIK, there is very little interchangeability between the early (216/235) and late (194/230/250/292) Chevy sixes

. Yes, late Chevy sixes have much more interchangeability with the SBC V8's... but might be able to fake an early valve cover onto a later engine for 'the look'...

. Always wondered, how do they get oil up into the top/rocker arms of the splash lube sixes?

. I knew Chevy's were always advanced OHV, no flatheads, but shocked to learn they didn't get an oil pump till part of '53...

Got my wrinkle walls out and screwed the beads so they're ready to put on the Falcon for the pre '64 drags this Sunday at Toutle, Wa. We're heading up Sat. and will camp out at the track. Sunday is the event, and expect 100+ cars to attend and race. Fun event, and make as many passes as you can fit into a day!

Hopefully the Eagles will hook better than the Hurst pie crusts did last year! The Hurst are so hard the Falcon spun them the length of the 1/8th mile. Starting out at 20 psi, and I'll lower them down until they bite well. I've got some old skinny tires/wheels to hang on the rear for towing the car, so I don't have to tow it with the slicks on it.

The rods had little scoops on the bottom that picked up oil; but I'm not sure how the top end was done, unless they relied on the cloud of oil that was floating around the engine
I do know that the later 235s were decidedly low-tech in that department: A simple metal tube dumped oil on top of the rocker shaft

It appears that they did have an oil pump, but pre-1953 was a low pressure system that relied on splash to feed the rod bearings

They had a pump - just not a high pressure or volume one. When I was but a kidlet, my dad drove a '49 Chev, and it had enough of a pump to be able to use a partial-flow (hung off the side) oil filter with replaceable cartridge in it.

Believe it or not, Chev did not incorporate an oil filter into design of the inline 6's until 1961!

My '59 Chevy had one hanging from U-bolts on the intake manifold
I don't remember if my '61 truck (which I believe also had a 235) had one or not
