what does everyone think of this?

now i just picked this up...fairly cheap, come to find out, its a rare car? i would like to see if i can hear some more info if anyone knows about this car more so than my knowledge of nothing other than the limited production due to the year produced

its a 1942 dodge 4dr sedan deluxe custom i believe?

1942 was the last civilian model produced be for WWII..they were continued to be produced until 1947 in limited quanities for use as government cars until the war was over...Not all that rare but finding one that is complete and restorable condition is rare..

Do a nice cleanup..parts are available from the collectors of vintage cars..

i planned to chop, airbag it, new hemi swap...update the axle, interior, just clean it up to a reliable sick ride to cruise...the guy that was just explaining it to me on killbillet.com was saying its a car that needs to go to a classic restorer and that its a rare car to find so on and so forth...

plus the guy i bought it from has a yard full of like 11 desoto and dodges of the same years just about...from 40-44

Yes, somewhat rare. But not in a sence that it should only go to a restorer. Heck, a hobbiest must have "saved" that car decades ago if you noticed the antique car reg plates with a low number..... but why would a hobbiest then just let it rust away?

the guy i bought it from acquired the whole car collection from the passing of his father, so he is selling all that he doesnt trully want, and i just happen to find out about it...so his dad was the hobbyist more so...i plan to chop it and make it like i planned

Many years ago I aquired a '42 Chev (wish I still had it). For some odd reason it had flat black paint on the chrome, I couldn't for the life of me understand why someone would paint the chrome. Years later after talking to some people, I had the answer - they painted the chrome due to "Black Out" regulations during the war. If you find a car with painted chrome, it's an early build, after '45 the chrome was back.

From what I have read years ago; the chrome was eliminated because the chromium was needed for the war effort. It only comes from what was called Rhodesia. Chromium was used for "hard chroming" in industrial uses. I don't think it was about the blackout as that was about the size and types of lights, and when you could use lights. Interestingly, the blackout regs were pretty much dropped as the initial shock of Pearl was over with. Many coastal cargo ships were easy targets when passing by cities and towns that were lit up.

The history is interesting to me. The last German U-boat sunk in WW2 is just offshore near here. It sank one ship in Maine and another here in CT....then the US Navy tracked it down. The reason the coal ship was a good target is because the east coast was lit up like party time. the U-boats could see the ship's shape as it passed by lighted towns.

I think what He had though was actual chrome that was painted over. I have heard of that before...can not remember what the reason was. It was a war thing though.
Cool looking old DODGE, lots of streetrod possibilities.

Just my 2 cents, but if it were me, I'd cross the "chop" off the above list. Not for reason of looks, but for reason of getting that puppy on the road and having some fun with it. Unless you are a seasoned veteran of challenging metal work or you intend to take it to a reliable and speedy chop shop, I think a major modification like that could sink your whole plan simply because it would take so long and be so difficult you would eventually lose interest.

Maybe get the thing into mechanical shape and drive it for a year or two in primer and without a fully finished interior. Then, if you feel you can't live without a top chop, take it back off the road and get out the torch and hammer.

Nice find, BTW. Should be nice rod.
