what does a speed censor do?

ok i have an 89 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 with automatic trans i bought the truck with a bad tranny it was a 4speed automatic with overdrive i couldnt find one of them trannys so i bought a 3 speed automatic. now on the old tranny it didnt have a speed censor cause it was broken off but the new tranny does have it there is a 2 wire plug that is suppose to plug into this thing and it looks like you can screw a cable on the end of it too for the speedometer or the cruise or something so can anyone tell me what this speed censor does and does it have to be hooked up for the tranny to shift and work right thanks for any help and if you need more info let me know

Most speed sensors are used for cruise control or speedo (electronic) or both. A speed sensor that has a hook-up for a cable was probably used on a vehicle with a cruise and cable driven speedo. I have one on a mid 80's Fox car and one of an earlier one. They are identical even though the later one had an eledtronic speedo....it just has a cap over the drive hole, held in by a circlip.
