what does the square, and the triangle mean on a cloyes gear set

my crank gear is on the square. if that's for low end, i like it, if it's for advanced i will have to take it off. i dont want to . all i know is the circle is for straight up and it aint on the circle.

Here's a link for you.

Timing Chain Install

As you can see, setting the crank sprocket on the square RETARDS the timing. This will give you LESS bottom end and more top end. NOT what you want.

Actually retarding the cam 4 degs does lower your torque by a few points, but the higher end HP gained is sometimes well worth it on cams with a duration in between the 240-265 range.

To the best of my knowledge, advancing the cam timing 4 degrees will lower when the torque curve begins by about 200 RPM. This will yield more bottom end.

Conversely, retarding the cam timing 4 degrees will raise when the torque curve begins by about 200 RPM. This will yield more top end.

Advancing the cam increases low-end torque while compromosing high end power. Retardng the cam does the opposite.
