Get a 383 crank, rods, and pistons.
|
Grinding a 400 crank to 383 will cost as much or more than a aftermarket. 350 pistons wont work wrong pin hight. best to buy a ready made kit.

Heres a good deal on a rotating assembly for a street engine. http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...tModelId=14966
Just have to get it balanced. |
Get a set of 400 SBC 5.565" connecting rods. The mains on the crank need to be turned down to the 350 crank size. The 400 crank will need to be re-balanced.
The 350 block will need some hand clearance grinding on the bottoms of the cylinders and the oil pan rail for crank/rod clearance. |
i thought a 400 crank in a 350 + 30 over made it a 383??? and that the block had to be machined??
there's a lot i dont know... so just asking questions. |

i do have a stock 400sbc (as far as i know) and a stock 350 sbc complete. and a set of 305 h rods and pistons stock. i would appreciate some ideas. going in a 1985 pontiac traans am
|
..........and 5 months later he returns ?????? If you have a complete 400 sbc then just build it into a 406, why spend a lot of money to get a lesser engine? A 406 will chit on a 383 with the same parts.
|
what do i need to do or get for that 400 to a 406
|
Have it bored +.030. You'll need .030 oversize pistons.
