Noob question: What exactly is my chevy engine?

Casting code: 3970010 (searching the charts suggest it could be a 302, 327 or 350)

engine code: v0808TBB (does the suffix prove that it is a 350?)

Your engine appears to be a 350,built August 8th 1970 at the Flint Michigan plant,4 bolt mains,was in a 1/2 or 3/4 ton with a 3 speed tranny.

Thanks for the quick response. Is there any (negative) significance to the T (truck) part of the suffix? This engine is in my 1970 firebird that I'm planning on building up. Does it seem like a good start?

I'd say that should be a very good engine to build. If it's all original,you may find it to have a steel timing gear and heavy duty oil pump already. Not all the 4 bolt engines had 'em,but a lot did. As you've probably heard,you can get tons of performance stuff for the 350,and they're tough as a steel ball,so you're pretty well set.
Or,if you'd like something a little different,I have a very good 1968 Pontiac 400 4bbl. in my '57 GMC I'm planning to swap out,so it'll be available soon. I'd trade it for a good GMC 270 or 302 straight six.
