A 68 Shelby Mustang 500 -- my friend bought it at 18 with his own money, made working for his dad at the gas station...

He let me drive it back from Lorain one night, and on the long straight alongside the Ford plant I got it up to 135, it had more guts than that but I didn't.

That plant is closing next week, by the way....

Lessee,

I had a '66 Ford Fairlane GT390 that was pretty fast (but it wasn't stock). I had a '69 Z/28 (real 302), but, uh, it wasn't stock either. I had a pretty fast '70 Nove, but, it wasn't stock-gosh, I guess the fastest stock car I have driven was a '66 Caprice 396/4 spd I had, like, a million years ago.

The fastest stock Street Car I have ridden in was a Nascar Mustang that a Buddy had who worked in the Machine Shop where I took my stuff- (I can't remember-were those '69's or '70's?) I remember it was jet Black and had the widest valve covers I had ever seen at the time-

I had a 71 Dodge Polara 4 door with a 383 that I ran the back roads with. Routinely had it up past 120 on the speedo. I kind of miss that old boat.

Fastest car driven

I had a 27 Ford Roadster for 3 years that I drove at New England Dragway. I went 9.2 seconds at 140 mph in the 1/4.

Does almost driven count? When I worked in the tranny shop the boss told me one day to go out and pull that corvette in. He said the guy said there was something wrong with the tranny. I went out and there was a 427 4 speed vette. I dont remember the year. I started it up put it in reverse let out the clutch and nothing. I tried all the gears and it would not move. We dragged it in and after I got the tranny on the bench we found the main gear had every tooth gone. I never did get to drive it.

Most of those car magazines tested vehicles with 2 people on board, full fuel tanks, test equipment, and a "5th wheel" recording device.. So the times were real world...... not drag strip certified and no staging light to trick.

edited= not to mention that turbo mufflers weren't invented yet and none had actual headers..... etc. choke choke... cough.......

Ford pickup

C'mon guys!! Stick to the subject. I believe the question was FASTEST FACTORY machine. Most of the nine pages of replies are about modified vehicles. Why do these replies always seem to stray from the original question immediately? OK, here is my reply to the original question. The fastest factory machine(acceleration)I've driven was my sons Ford Lightning pickup. No add ons, no bull, just plain fast from Henry and crew, and you can take the trash to the transfer station every Saturday.

Fasted car I've ever ridden in was a 2003 Z06 Corvette. An officer friend of mine had one and we'd take it out on the weekend and drive from Spangdahlem to Ramstein on the Autobahn. It's 86 miles from autobahn exit to autobahn exit and 90 miles from gate to gate. Our best time was 28 minutes from exit to exit and a total time of 36 minutes gate to gate.

The fastest Car I've ever driven, 2005 BMW M3 sportster. Rented one while I was on vacation in Munich last summer. Man that thing would fly. Buried the Speedo at 280kph on the Autobahn betwwen Munich and Stuttgart. That...was fun.

Old Geezer checks in

Back in the day the fastest top end car I ever had the pleasure of driving was a 302 Boss Mustang with the rev limiter removed and set up by the infamous Bud Moore (Nascar fame) in Trans-Am trim for a street customer. It was scary fast. The owner made the mistake of rolling down the drivers window at near top speed and it sucked the headliner down on our heads. Owner outran several South Carolina Highway Patrol cars with those big block motors even though some of them were performance tuned on the sly by Cotton Owens (Nascar fame as well). All the while Steppenwolf wailed on the 8 track stereo with Born to Be Wild.....it's a wonder we are all still living!

I never chimed in on this so I guess its my turn.
Fastest Ive driven or owned for that matter is my 85' vette. Supposedly from the factory its supposed to top out at 150. Ive gotten it to 120 and it did that pretty easily, and didn't walk like other cars do at high speeds, and it definitly felt like that throttle still had alot more to go to.
