What gauge metal to use????

Hi, I didn't really know were to put this post but I have a question that I think you guys can definitely handle. As it is I can put a motor together but I cant figure out what gauge metal to use.

Here is what is did, I have a 85 cutlass and I am modifying the trunk so that I can place a medium size fuel cell in the middle and have room on each side to place a nitrous bottles. I already moved the battery over by the passenger side wheel well. Anyway I have already cut out the depression in the trunk the is for the spare tire out (picks are in my Photo gallery).

I am lost as to what gauge metal??? to use to cover the hole that is now left there(sturdy enough the mount things to with out flex). Being a previous Heat and air guy i used 26 gauge to make a template to ease the process of cutting the steel needed - would be allot easier I thought.

Ans another part is I have no clue what to use as body filler after the welds are done. This is not a show car but I do want it to to look neat at least.

Any info would be appreciated!!!

16 gauge sheetmetal is plenty rigid for that.
Any body filler will work. Just sand it smooth.

Being a H&A guy too, I'd go with some 20 or 22 ga. for that.
Those newer cars are thin anyway and really 18 ga is kinda thick for them.
Grind down the welds and use some seam sealer on the proper areas and use some silicone around the cell if you want. It will take paint after it dries and will be a little more flexable around the cell area.
I'd run a couple of angles under the cell edges though just for strength in that area. Your call.
