What gear ratio should I use??
I'm planning on running a 350/700r4 setup in my hotrod and was wondering if anyone could help me pick a rearend gear ratio. I'm using a 9" ford and want a good cruising ratio for the highway. I have a pickup with 3:50 ratio and it runs approx. 1800 rpm's at 55-60 mph. I like that cruising speed or maybe even 2000 rpm's at 60 mph but my truck doesn't have a 700r4. Any idea's, Thanks.

you will want a 3.73 at least, anything less and you will lug the engine. it should sit at about 2k @ 60

If you check 4x4 truck sites you can get a gear ratio chart that lists tire size,trans gear ratios and rear end ratios and RPM.I cant remember which site it was but if you look back in the posts I got the web address off this site in about February.It helped me pick my gear ratio for my truck.Another thing to keep in mind is what intake manifold you run.I run a single plane manifold that makes power at 2500 to 6500 rpm so my final gear ratio has me at the bottom RPM range of my manifold at cruising speed.

With a big block,373 gears ,Art Carr 700r4 and 28 inch tall tires, i run about 2000 rpm at 70 mph.The 700r4 has a first gear ratio of 3 to 1 and a final drive of .70 to 1.

3:50 ratio would make it run slightly higher rpm's than 3:73 correct? My tire size I am going to run on my hotrod is 33/12.50/15.

less RPM. the higher the #, the lower the gear ratio.

I run 4.56 gears and 31x10.5 tires and a 700r4 with a 2300 stall lock-up converter.In overdrive the engine turns 2650rpm at 70mph.My single plane manifold makes peak power from 2500 on up and my truck weighs 6000lb.33 inch tires are tall.I would run 4.10 or 3.73 gears.You need the chart to help you decide.Go to the top of this board to the search bar and type in Gear Ratio Charts the link you need is in the second post and sixth entry the link that has the word chevell in it.It has the gear ratios for the 700r4 and you can type in tire sizes and gear ratios and what rpm at what speed you want.That way no guess work is involved in the decision.

Will the nodular fit any 9" housing? Did Ford make a 8.5 nodular. The third member with the bolt right in front of the fill plug is the 9",, right
