What goes in your Road Tool Box?
I'm going a 5000 mile road trip in mid June with my '40 Ford pickup. Space is limited with regards to secure storage. I have a tool box which is approx. 24 X 10 X 10, in which to put a road kit of tools and nesessities. This will be the first ride for the truck. It has a Ford powertrain, everything is Ford except for the GM steering column, and everything is new.
Here's what I am taking: 1. 3/8 Craftsman socket set. 2. set of combination flat wrenches 3/8 to 1 inch. 3. set of screw drivers 4. pliers, wire cutters, tin snips, visegrips. 5. a can of rad sealer, spare tire in a can, ATF, oil. 6. fuses, electrical tape, roll of tie wire and 12 ga electrical wire. 7. ......... what else ?? |

you really need a volt meter, some high temp silicone, make sure you have the correct sockets you need to get the spindle retaining nut off. With out ever really driving the truck you don't know any of its common traits so its hard to prepare for. Carry extra water too. Cereal boxes covered in silicone on both sides make good gaskets so maybe line the bottom of the tool box with a piece of that or the blank sheets of gasket you can buy. Line wrenches for tightening brake and fuel lines. Rags. Anything your worried about plan on it breaking.

Mini-Maglight (gotta have); A couple of rad hose clamps; a jumper wire with alligator (roach) clips on the ends; Spare fanbelts; Tire plugs & plug tools ( I also carry the small 12v compressor; spare spark plug or 2.

A few feet of 3/8ths rubber hose and clamps for fuel/tranny line problems, extra fuel filter, some kind of gasket material and sealant, spare tire if you have room, jerry can, extra wire/connectors, electrical & duct tape, small assortment of hardware that might rattle loose.
And as said flashlight, ratchet set, combo wrenches, pliers, wire cutters, gloves, rags, plugs, wires, oil and every other fluid that could leak, tow rope, 12V air compressor, booster cables. And the good ol' BFH! Good thing you have a truck, chain an aluminum dry box in there and your set! |
