I have a 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible 428 HO
Bored .040 aligned honed and balanced. cast iron headers. . The rear is a 355 limited slip, I had it balanced with a man. flywheel and a automatic flywheel.I loved the 4-speed, but because of slamming gears I had to drive 30 miles stuck in gear, upon inspection the pilot bearing
was in the bottom of the bellhousing, everything was tight!How could this happen? I was afraid of
this happening again so I put in the turbo 400
had to modify crossmember and shorten driveline.
I want the the 4-speed back but want some kind of explanation for this rare event, at the time about 2000 mile on motor,clutch assy.The only thing I could think of was excessive crank end play, but don't think the engine was the area that
was the problem.The engine and transmission are 1969's Thanks

terry, dont know about the pilot bearing,but the 250 no spark could be break in ignition wire! run a jumper wire from battery to coil[ignition switch side] if it runs you'llhave to track down the break[open],jimm

there are a few reasons the pilot brng was in the bottom of the bellhouse 1 the input shaft isn't long enough so it doesen't go into the bering,2 the bering came out when the tranny was removed meaning the bering didn't fit tight in the crank ,3 the bering wasn't in the crank when the tranny was installed meaning the bering didn't fit tight. the bering should fit tight and require some tapping to get it in then must be greased so the input shaft doesent bind and cause friction that could loosen it up or wear it out

Tom is right, I would take this opportunity to put in a roller pilot bearing. It eliminates the stuck in gear syndrome or sticky shifting under full load. Sounds to me like it was shot to begin with thats why it spun and came out.

did you have any problem with overheating on your 40 over when you first were breaking it in? If so how did you fix it? My 60 over 455 is giving me fits..see "pontiac under pressure post" and any help greatly appreciated

Aren't the bushings self-lubricating? I think they're made of oilite
