What has happened to Speed Pro forged pistons
 

This is a compilation/composited from a thread in the Speedtalk engine forums. The person making these statement used to work at Federal Mogul.

"I ran the Speed-Pro division for a couple years....before my corporate execution....

All the popular numbers moved to the round wire retainers when the manufacturing was shifted to the Malden, MO plant about 6-7 years ago.

They have since closed the Malden plant, moved production to India and have yet to make anything there. You likely will not need to consider them as an option in the future unless something changes.

They closed the American plant with plans of making them all in India. The plant in India did not have enough open capacity, pistons are on backorder for over a year, and now they're getting parts from anywhere they have some open time....brilliant management - I promise that somebody got promoted for closing the Malden plant...

FM closed the Malden., MO plant early this year and has been living on inventory since then for forged parts..

And in my opinion - management is ALWAYS to blame for any ills that befall a large corporation. The combination of foresight, good decision making skills, and proper allocation of resources is why these guys are payed MILLIONS per year. A lot of these guys seem to be terrible at their jobs. And they get paid for it regardless of results.

I was in a large auditorium meeting where Dick Snell, then CEO of FM, announced that they were purchasing all of T&N (the source of the asbestos liability that supposedly brought them down), after being turned down on a partial purchase. A lower level I.T. guy pointedly asked him about T&N's well documented asbestos liability that had served as something of a "poisin pill" over prior year. The high and mighty CEO said that they had factored all that into their numbers (in a proposal that was cobbled up in a day) and that this was a great deal. Arrogance....."

What does the above statement mean ?
Does all this mean that when the inventory is used up that will be the end of Speed Pro forged pistons ?

IMO and it's only my opinion it's all greed based... Then entire US of A is one big greedy monster...All the 65/75 year old grandparents want 10% return on there 401k's all the CEO's want there own private lear jets, all the factory workers want in 5 years what it took there parents 40 years to get...and the guy behind you going to work in the morning wants you to get out of his way so he can be ahead of you.........

Wow, now i feel better.

This is the sad truth of the Chinanization of the good old USA. I thought I would try to learn Spanish a little better in school, I was wrong. I should learn Chinese since that is going to be the dominate language in the World, give it about 20 years.

All the capitalists speak Engrish. Manufacture in China does mean low quality anymore, necessarily. If price is the main selling point of your products, then you have to look at China. For me, I have not used any Speed Pro pistons in 10 years. SRP and Wiesco are cheap enough.

I agree K, Everything in this country revolves around the dollar bill. The dollar bill IS GOD. When money overcomes the common good, were in trouble, and it already has.

Hi evryone,

I live in Malden,mo. where federal mogul was located. they closed the piston

plant, which cost our small town hundreds of jobs. They moved on and we

stayed.

They were an OK piston but far from the best. So screw 'em anyway. Life goes on.

This really pistons me off! I always thought they were better than the stuff Keith Black/Silvolite turns out ,but there's several sets of Speed Pro Forged and Hyperutectic pistons on E-Bay right now that look nothing at all like Speed Pro products ( for 350 SBC ). Hardly no skirt and very little pin boss support. I thought they were just someone trying to sell junk off as Speed Pro, but maybe it is Speed Pro after all.

Oh well,that explains my problem down in Brazil.I just received a set of pistons that I bought from a friend´s speed shop in NJ.I ordered a set of LS6 type,high compression for a 454.What I got is plain Jane flat top with a part number I can´t find on my books and they are made in India.Now get this,I have nothing against the Indian industry but I had to pay 60% duty tax plus expensive freight for the wrong set of pistons... NG
