what heads to use???

ok so i have got a set of heads with numbers 6272292, with my research says they came on early 70's 402. and i have a set of 346236, from what i read these are the peanut port heads. both are open chamber. ok so now for my question, i am building a budget 454 and i have these 2 heads on my garage floor to chose from and only have the money to have one set rebuild. with one would be better? i am not looking to go to radical with this build. my goal is only about 450hp with over 500tq. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Really not much of a choice. The early heads have 122+ cc. chambers. Small valves, not un-lead gas compatible and terrible flowing intake runners.

Only thing better on the later heads are the combustion chambers are smaller.

IF you do the early heads correctly. New exhaust seats, guides valves etc. ...Install hard seats for the exhaust. I usually do the 1.88 route on the exhaust. But these heads will only go stock (1.72) exhaust size. The seats larger will break thru the casting.

Then install 2.19 intake valves in heads. This will require a competant shop and a lot of hand bowl grinding. Cut the head surface .030 and you are at about the best you can get from these heads. NOT CHEAP and you can probably find better stuff for less.

Trade the peanut ports to the shop for door stops (thats what I use). Or weight. Possibly someone with a med-duty truck might need them to replace a cracked one..
