What the heck is this thing for?

Anyone know what this big metal screen thingy is for? Its inside the aircleaner housing on my '86 chevy truck. Looks restrictive to say the least! I tried to remove it but its glued to the housing some some kind of gorilla glue crap. Thats about the biggest darn air filter i've ever seen too! Almost 7" tall!
My wifes Caprice has a smaller version of the same thing in it too! Hmmmm, inquiring minds want to know!

I have one in my 85 blazer. Might be part of an offroad package. Hooks, quad shocks, skid plate and posi in mine. I am not sure what the purpose of the inner part is.

I'd really like to know what that little green thing in the center is, my caprice has one and I don't have clue what it's for.

I believe the green thing is a temp sensitive vacuum switch. It senses inlet air temp to control the flapper door in the air cleaner snorkel for hot air when the engine is cold?

Its an air laminator. It makes turbulent flow into laminar flow for travelling through the TB. Its not a restriction... at least I've never encountered one that is. Many GM guys insist on taking it out, but it doesn't really add any HP. In fact on some of the GMs with MAF sensors, you have to recalibrate the inputs to get proper A/F ratios because the filament is getting "false" info.

Take it out and see what happens. You can always put it back.

It would be a restriction if it were small, i imagine, that's why your filter is so tall too. More 'surface' area for your air to deal with kinda sorta make for not so turbulent as smaller for that laminar dillio. That green thing is a tracking device lol
