what the hey????? 283 goes beserk!
OK, I turn the ingnition on my 57' vet 283 (in a t-bucket), basically new mojo. As far as I was told about 50 miles on the engine (valley pan, etc. rocker arms and so on look brand new = not a drop of road grease, looked like it was just hot tanked). The motors been running flawlesly, anyway, I turn the key its starts to fire and clank (sounded like a broken cam) it locks up. I pulled the pan and head, and number 8 was bent and locked on the crank counterweight. I pulled the rod and piston, no cylinder or crank damage, no apparent water leak into the cylinder, no rust, just a bent and twisted rod. WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS???
All replys greatly appreciated. T-bucket tim North Carolina |

tbelltim,
If I had to take a guess mine would be raw fuel in that cylinder. So much it could not ignite and would not compress. The end result.......bent rod. If it is a carbureted, check the float. If it is fuel injected check the injectors for leakage into the intake manifold. Good Luck Scholman |
