hp rating

The horsepower is difficult to guess without some other details. You didnt mention what the compression ratio of your pistons were....flat top? Depends also on the combustion chamber size. estimating a flat top piston with 64 cc heads and that cam...you're probably around 275 hp

Thanks for the reply.

I'm hoping that your estimate is a little low. The motor was rated at 240 Hp from the factory witht a 2 Barrel carburator. I would think that just adding a 4 barrel carb and headers would have gotten it to the 275 HP. The old heads were stock 882 76CC smog heads and the Vortecs are 64 CC. Also the heads have the Z28 springs installed.

The pistons are the stock flat top pistons (8:50 to 1) I hear the vortecs with proper gaskets will get it to around 9:50 - 10:00 to 1 compression)

No, someone just saying 300 hp wont make me feel any better. I was just stating the the motor was probably at 275 with the 4 barrel carb, ignition, intake and headers...Guess that adds nothing huh ??

I'mm just trying to get a reasonable estimate.

Anyway, here are the specs for the cam:

Lift: .443/.465
Duration: 288/298
Duration @ .050": 214/224
Lobe Separation: 112 LC

As far as the intake - Idle to 5500 RPM

I'm just lookin for something that has really good low end torque....stop light to stop light fun !

I dont like the look of the cam specs.Thats just my opinion. If the engine is carefully blue printed with those parts,Im sure it would go high 13s or low 14s.
I would use a bigger carb and a cam with a lobe separation of 110,maybe.I would use more lift too and a little more duration.
what do your heads flow for CFM?

horsepower

I was estimating on the low side because I didnt know some of the variables. I too was a bit concerned with the cam choice. Seems a bit meek to me. The vortec heads should help with compression, but the carb could use an upgrade. I still think that with everything in order that 300 hp is about peak.

That Elgin cam is .443/.465, 214*/224* @ .050", 112* LSA 107* ICL. It's basically the same cam as the Summit K1103 and the #24502476 cam used by GMPP in the 350HO 330HP crate engine and the CT350 350HP circle track crate engine. They use stock 350 short blocks with Vortec heads, so USA_CHEVROLET_1 has pretty much duplicated that engine so I believe he should be in that area for HP.

340ish hp and about 410ish ftlbs. Its a typical "RV cam" and will definitely have that torque you're looking for.

For a solid street runner its a pretty good combo, you may want to consider 1.6 rockers and you'll need to get your carb and ignition tuned for it, but it will be a good street runner, not bad for stop light races either.

Thanks for the replies. I originally planned to use the stock stamped self aligning rockers, but maybe I need to rethink that. also, what type of gasket to use to get the compression up ?
