Why not use Millodon splayed billet 4 bolt main caps? its about $185 take the block down to the machine shop they will drill and tap the block for it then line hone the block. After that you wont need a cap girdle. about 100 for the drill and tap and 100 for the line hone.

A 4 bolt spayed will be stronger than a 2 bolt with a girdle.

Not all that much but putting like 350 to 400 hp to a 2 bolt scares me... I know you aren't supposed to worry till 600 but I want to put the gridles on just in case.

400 horses with a 2 bolt main is nothing, I wouldn't let that bother you one bit.

Sorry, I think this is a waste of time and money. Two bolt main 400 small blocks do not have main cap walking problems with reasonable horsepower levels. I know a few peopele that drag race 400 small blocks with little or no modification to the block and they live at 6500-7000 rpm making 400-500 horsepower. Money would be better spent for heads and intake system.

Spend the money on better rods Dave, thats the 400 SBC weak point. If you want to strengthen the bottom end then put ARP studs in, thats all you will need.

Don't use the short 400 rods. Use a good 5.7 or longer rod. They produce less side loading on the cylinder walls. Be sure and add good rod bolts.
They should be okay for 400 to 500 HP.

Crower, Carillo and Oliver are probably some of the best you can buy.
