What Oil Pump

I would like some opinons on what oil pump to run on a 383 sbc. Sho supplied M55 standard pump. On my last set up, my engine starved top end. I broke a rocker arm and rocker arm stud. Should i use a high volume pump or high pressure? If i do can i use stock oil pan? Thanks for the help.

I ve used/sold and recommended Melling M-55A pumps. Since the seventies. High pressure and won't eat up the cam gear

If the clearences are right there is no reason why it shouldn`t work with the stock melling replacement pump. If your running top end oil restrictors should be the only reason why the top would starve.

thanks for the replys. Heres is what i know, I had a local machine shop build the 383. ran great then i started breaking the rocker arms and studs. the last time i fixed it myself, and left the valve covers off to watch the oiling. It took minutes for oil to dripple out of the push rods. They said it was because it was a roller motor and that they can restrict oil to the top of the motor. I bought it. we decided the easiest solution would be to go to a full roller rocker, but they needed to machine heads for differnt studs. I pulled the motor and realized that the thrust was out. I had like .060 end play. They blamed the transmission for knocking the thrust out. All of this said, when I fired the motor oil pressure stayed at around 40 psi. I dont know, im not an expert at this stuff. Every other sbc squirted oil to the fenders. They were supposed to go thru the motor fix the crank etc. Some say high volume some say no. Any ideas? Thanks Again. Im ready to start putting it together. thanks alot. Im not running any restricters that i know of.
