I've seen a few photochops on this board, and we even had a kazillion page long thread (Virtual Kustomz or something similar) where people posted their photochops. So what kind of program do you use? I know Photoshop is the most popular one but first of all, I dont have the $$$ for it, second, I heard its quite hard to learn if you dont know what you're doing and starting from blank. I always wanted to photoshop cars but the only way I can is in microsoft paint   :embarrass So are there any other cheap (free is the keyword) programs in the net somehwere that you know of or use?

Here's my paint photoshop and as you can tell its quite unprofesional and takes a lotta time...

Before

After

And I cant change colors...

Yep, Adobe Creative Suite, but it does cost $$$ and isn't worth it unless it is a tool for you that you really want to take the time to learn and is going to put money back into your pocket. Does anyone know if you can buy Photoshop CS on its own without buying the whole bundle?

Along with perhaps Macromedia Studio MX (another overpriced bundle of creative goodies) it's the workhorse of graphic designers, web designers, you name it, and it is very good at what it does, especially when you take it to more advanced levels, but again this is mostly a professional industry tool, and the price reflects that.

You could try Corel Photopaint, I used to use it a lot along with CorelDraw, but now I use Photoshop and Freehand instead.

Or another suggestion would be to find a used older copy of Photoshop, even ver 6 (heck, even older than that) would work for what you want to do. I'll see if I have one floating around, I may have a "light" copy of Photoshop laying around that I can send you, I think it's version 6 if I remember, and it's legit too!

Come to think of it, I have CorelDraw 10 I think also that includes Photopaint, also a legit boxed copy, might even have the manuals still. I'll let you know, I'd be happy to send it on!

Could take a few weeks from South Africa though.

I use Gimp ( http://gimp.org ) and mogrify ( http://imagemagick.org ), Both Gimp and ImageMagick are completely free, right down to the source code. A variation of Gimp called Film-gimp was used by Sony in several motion pictures.

There is a fine tutorial for Gimp at http://tuxgraphics.org/graphics/ and even though the tutorial is aimed at Linux users, Gimp works the same in Windows.

If you need 3D rendering, try Blender ( http://www.blender3d.org ). If you want to compete with Pixar, better get a render farm and Cinelerra ( http://www.heroinewarrior.com ), because Pixar has been using Linux a long time.

If you don't want to go to the bother of installing any of those, grab a Knoppix CD ( http://www.knoppix.net ), pop it in, boot, run the software from the CD. It will be a little slower running off the CD, but it's fast enough. Ubuntu also has a "live CD" version and will send it to you without even charging postage ( http://www.ubuntulinux.org ). So what if they have a funky name and logo? The software works.

Since hotrodders.com uses php, it could do resizing on the fly but -somebody- would likely need to donate a few extra servers to handle that kind of load. (Imagine piles of hi-res photos being resized while everybody's searching and posting and journalling).

I got paint shop pro 9, Its what Docvette recommended in the never ending bad freekin day thread. I got it free from Download.com. Ive already done a few pictures, I even got one sent in for a new avatar. I hope it looks good when it gets put back into shape.

I should download that, right now I use ancient MS paint, that's been around since windoze 3.1 was the new hot thing. Why they put it on my XP compy, I do not know but it's useful sometimes.

I would have but the only picture I could find was in that one in the "who are behind our screenames" thread. You were turned to the side and I didnt think it would look as funny as the ones that are in it!
