What plug gap?

Have a 350 Chevy with the following specs, need to know what to set plug gap to.

-1988 350
-9.5:1
-Vortec Heads with new Champion Plugs (Made sure they are for vortec)
-MSD StreetFire HEI Unit, Upgraded with Advance curve kit, MSD Green Module (Not the new red ones), MSD 8225 Coil, Brass Terminal Cap/Rotor
-Taylor 8mm Spiro Pro's

What should i be setting my gap to?

Thanks!

0.060" Yes sir.

wow, i was running .040 before, thanks!

.060" is mostly an emissions spec, performance specs are between .025" and .045". .040-.045" would be appropriate in your case. Running an extremely large spec like .060" is just hard on the secondary ignition system parts - the cap, rotor, rotor button, coil, plug wires as it raises the resistance at the plug a great deal with no real positive effect on engine performance.

I'm just going by what the service manuals say.

I like .035 myself. MSD, mech pro billet,Auto lite R25, 10.5, radical cam, 383.

i have them gapped at .040 at the moment, Just leave them?

pepi 08-13-2010 09:47 PM

Sure why not MSD will handle that just fine .

.035" get the job done fine for a performance application. .040" is good. .060 is way too much.
If when you set the plug gap at .035" and the ground strap goes past the center electrode you can trim the ground strap length as required.
Trim the ground strap so it is just short of the far edge of the center post.
File smooth any sharp edges of the ground strap end after trimming.
