I've been reading and reading this thread and I almost didnt want to comment.
But here it is... I've known a lot of Hotrodders,I've been one most of my life. Here is a fact no one can argue with. Ive never seen a hotrodder that doesnt like fast cars! So what do u do when u finish building all those fast cars? Drive them real slow like me I'm sure! Im just almost finished with my 67 Camaro, see picture, (496 rat motor) I plan to drive this car real slow at all times! Can I say I never street raced? I'll keep the answer to that to myself..... You guys answer the question and keep it to yourself too! What do u call Pro Street? How about a 70 chevelle with a 100 h.p. engine in it. I havent seen any! we use to call that...All show no go... But you take a guy like Smokey,he drove a Ford Fiesta to work every day of the year! I emphasise To Work! So there I didnt break any rules! Think about this post the next time anybody answers a question on a car with a hot motor thats fully streetable. Maybe we should ask the guy not to ever street race it! Or obey all speed limits,we all do I'm sure! I once saw a sign that read............Drive it like you stole it........... Last edited by topwrench; 01-18-2012 at 06:58 PM. |

Jester , I agree with you that telling stories of street racing can make for some neat old stories, however if young guys read stories of street racing and think wow I going to go do that then are STUPID with no common sense in them. Like if there buddy jumped off a bridge they would follow scenario.
This site has over a 100K in members, so if members on this site are out cruising and crack open the throttle pound threw all the gears and are 30-40 MPH over the speed limit , police consider that street racing even when your cruising on your own. I can bet the farm that every member on here still does that while they are cruising to this day!! I dont see any harm in telling "OLD" stories of racing back in the day , doesnt make me go out looking for someone to run. Just my 2 cents. Kevin |

I agree with you all, avoid street racing, but I gotta tell u when one of these kids with those little box cars pulls up nxt to me at a street lite they always crack the throttle
So im an old man compared to them,I cant say I never blew their doors off,but If I raced every one of them, well,Id be doin time right now,Im sure! In the old days people met in remote lonely places to street race,Opa Locka airport in Miami comes to mind (was abandoned in the 60s) now it seems all these kids wanna race on the street at nite in front of everybody,so I dont do it n dont condone it,but I'd sure like to know where all these guys do WOT testing sometimes. Do they rent dragstrips or maybe drag the car to Bonnie I agree with following the rules here. But please guys dont say u never street raced if you did!

speed
When a young kid gets on here and asks a question about building an eng and hes looking for 400 hp out of a 350 and its his first car & every one tells him the big cams, intakes, carb's, comp ratios, pistons ETC. What does every one on here think hes gonna do the day he fires it up, hall it to a track,or the salt flats or dry lake! No hes going to put it in the street and nail it! To see how it runs. drive it back get on here ask a question about a 4000 rpm miss or black smoke and we're going to tell him how to fix it and make it faster, then hes going to take it back into the street & try it!! We take for granted this kid is responsible and safe he only drives the speed limit. Come on these guys arn't building trailer queens that don't get dirt on their tire treads
hotrodders.com is about mainly hot rods, hot rodders like speed So in fact we glorify speed look at our journals I dont see any 4 cylinder escorts with luggage racks I see and work on some cars that are hall'ed on trailers every where they go The fastest they go is the idle to the parking spot speed at the show! (IF their not concourse cars): These Queens have huge engines built for the track huge tires & wheely bars. Those are the guys that complain about we that like speed & power. And would never ever spin a tire leaving a car show ( course you must remember its hard to do on a trailer). Right in the beginning of this thread it was stated that someone was glad he got to post before this was sent to the dump. If this thread is breaking rules dump it! Because I guess even opinions offended this gentleman. Now I think I know you monitors arn't trailer queens (If you are I understand your thinking) If your like me, You could at least give a little more leeway before condemning something to the dump. Would you send the movies Hollywood knights, American graffiti, vanishing point, two lane black top, the giant gilla monster, grease etc. to the dump. I apologize to any one I might have offended by my thoughts: Jester Last edited by painted jester; 01-19-2012 at 10:37 AM. Reason: added an adition |

Well if u bet the farm on me you'll win.....
Soooo Id like to really know how some people test their cars and engines after they build them. Please post n let me know. Do u drag ur cars to racetracs to get the carbs jetted right? Im not condoning street racing, but really. How do you do this? I know about people who got killed eating potato chips. Didnt make me stop! The speed limit on the Interstate here is 75, I dont see anything wrong with getting to that speed in 3or4 seconds. Hey Jester, Two lane blacktop is my favorite movie! Ive worked on a lot of racecars n seen a lot of people get killed,Fireball Roberts and Dale Earndhardt to name two, very sad days, didnt keep anybody from racing though. |

Well when I raced we took the car to the track, we could go anytime as we had a key to it. That's where I would go to break in a engine also. As far as getting carbs set, or anything else that's what you do for the days before eliminations Where I am at in the state we have no interstates, one is about 70 miles South and another about 100 miles east. The closest highway is about 3 miles but that is a two lane road, with tons of cars. Other people can do as they please, I choose not to, Besides I have FI on my cars. Cops
I put 2 webber two barrel side draft carbs on A Harley 1/4 m. race bike late into the night! I had two Gaylord cops in my shop drive way visiting They did that a lot!!. And my shop was right across from the public library And the state police department was right around the corner! LOL You can see it in my journal to get an idea where it was and looked like! The nearest drag strips were 100s of miles away!! Dont do what Im about to say I did
I pulled the bike out on the street in front of my shop for a road test LOL No traffic it was about two in the morning I Nailed it (Its been 22 years and Ill bet the rubber on the road is still hot) I woke up the Whole city!!! LOL Lights were coming on 10 miles away ! every body showed up but a navy seal team!! The two cops that were in drive were cracken up! I got balled out so bad my ears were bleeding but never got a ticket I also got balled out a lot for open header tune ups (but I was zoned commercial) I ignored em Ive done this at every shop I ever owned and never got a ticket!!! but the car's were always back in the shop before the Calvary came!! My shops were a draw for kids and young men I liked that When I saw the shaker it brought this memory back thanks for that this was fun LOL I forgot I was old for a few seconds And the shaker left the line like it was shot out of a howitzer !!! I also road tested the supercharged mustang, 37 plymouth and all the cars that left my shop ( did this very safety minded though) Thats the reason we say road tested not track tested right guys.
