what rear end

there is a similar post bellow but hasnt really answered much

I have a 79 gmc 1/2 ton and a just replaced the stock 350 for a mild built caddy 500ci. Im taking out the th350 and swapping it for a th400. Currently i have the stock rear end and I am planning on swapping it for a posi rear end.
I was hoping someone would have some recomondations on what vehicle makes a good donor and what would hold up to the gobs of torque.

Any 1/2 ton truck that has a posi will work from '73 up through '86. You'll find posi's in most trucks with the trailering package. it may be easier to just upgrade your current rear to a posi. Especially if you want some steeper gears.
Like I said in the other post. If you can't put all of that torque to the ground there is no need to worry about breaking a rear end. Not gonna happen with a stock suspension and skinny street tires. Now all day smoke shows are another story...

82 Gmc

I was hoping someone would know the answer to this.
I have been looking for a posi rear end and found a 82 GMC 2500 3/4 ton "camper special" in the paper. The seller doesnt know if its posi and I dont want to drive an hour to go find out that its not. Does anyone have any info on this?

Most weren't equipped with limited slip or a locker.

Call the guy and ask if the service parts identification sticker is still in the glovebox, ask if there is a G80 or G86 code, if there is you have a limited slip.

If it isn't there, your guess is as good as mine.

'73-up half-ton truck 12-bolt units will bolt in, and the truck 10-bolts that they started using around '82 or so will bolt in if you use a shorter (by ~3/4") driveshaft. 10-bolts use a bigger U-joint, also. Find one from a Suburban & it might have bigger brakes.

The 14-bolt axles will bolt in the same place.

I am merging BOTH of your threads on this same subject *gilby246*
