what rear end to use?

I was discussing the fact that I will have to change the torque tube that I now have in my '48 Chevy Fleetline with a man that I had just met. I told him about the 250ci engine and TH350 tranny swap that I am planing. He said that if it was him he would put a rear end from a v8 stick shift. Question: Is this sound advice? I am confused now, I did not think it made much difference. He mentioned something about more torque that the six could muster out of that type of rear end. I think he is full of bull.

Not really full of BULL .......a V8 stick shift rear end ratio is, as a general rule , a 3.50 to a 4.10 ratio. These ratios, combined with the 2.52 ratio of the first gear in the Turbo 350, would make the truck take off from a stop with less strain and also would be a " better " pulling gear. Trucks from the past ....were almost always geared like that for working.....

IF........you are keeping the front suspension stock, I would find a rear with the same wheel pattern......and a ratio of 3.5 or so......with the proper width.
