With a 4 speed the 3.42 would be middle of the road between good take-off performance and highway use. The 3.73 would be more of a in-town gear. A 3.23 or 3.08 would be a little better on the highway, but a little less exciting from a stop light.
With a 5 speed the 3.73 would work well, but the 3.42 would still be a little better if you are on the highway more. Tire size also has something to do with it. Taller tires are going to slow down acceleration some, but lower RPMs on the highway.
