What seat for a '59 El Camino?
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good late mode seat for a '59 el Camino (Impala)? The project truck I bought to build with/for my grandson came w/o a seat.

That is a big car so you should not have a problem finding a seat to fit. I would keep it a bench seat so your grandson can have his girl friend snuggle next to him though. Tim

My opinion on late model seats in old cars is they look like crap in most cases, they just dont have the look of the vehicle. If you cant find a original try any early to mid 60s GM full size 2 door cars for the seat, the late models do not have any chrome on them and a 59 needs chrome to look right. Jeff

58-64 should all have the same floor brackets, same floor...but I figure Willys36 knows that. I love the 62-64 Chevy SS buckets, if you can find some.

Early 60s Chevy would be perfect for the reasons you all say - size, lots of chrome, etc. Early Chevies are not that easy to find in B'field. I learned to drive in a '63 SS Impala 2dr HT w/ engine turned dash, console exterior trim. And I want a center console BECAUSE of the snuggle factor!

59 & 60 had seats that were 66" wide in 61 the seat shrank to about 60" 59/60 have their own seat brackets as the floor is not even close to having a flat surface anywhere except the footwells. There is about a 2" difference in floor height from the rocker to the bottom of the floor tunnel, and the area under the seat angles back at about a 20* angle. I tried to make seats from a late Camry, 88+Grand Prix and 93+T-Bird fit. Finally gave up and put the original bench in Someone once told me that a seat from an 88+ Chev pickup fits nicely, but I have never seen it, so I cannot say |

re: What seat for a '59 El Camino?
Floor is no problem. The one in the car we got is rusted out in the rear dip so I am going to weld in a flat floor. Will adapt seat mounts as needed. This will give some room for exhaust in this strange X frame.
I figured I would end up with a large pickup seat but those usually don't have enuf chrome. Guess I'll get my trusty Harbor Freight 30' tape measure, my loyal Radio Flyer red wagon and head to Pick-A-Part. Come to think of it, haven't been there in a couple years. That is unacceptable. |
