What Sewing Machine?

I'm going to try to use the headliner install process used in this thread:
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=38449

Basically, I'll need to run a stitch through some cloth, thin padding, and the upholstry board. I may also want to put an edge on some thinner carpeting.
I'll probably leave the seats to a pro.
What sewing machine can I get away with?
Would an older Singer like this one work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6252035445
or do I need something stronger?
Thanks!

Larry

Hey Larry;
That machine wont do it! Just because it's old, doesn't make it strong. That machine on E-bay is fine for dress making but no upholstery. Do yourself a favor and buy a used Singer 111 or 211. These are walking foot machines and will sew just about anything.They have depreciated as low as they will go, so whatever you pay for one today, you will get all your money back out of it in 20 years or so when you' re ready to sell it.I bought mine years ago for a small project, and I don't regret it. Just my 2 cents, Dan

I have a nice old 111W153 and love it. It's just like my 50s trucks old and simple.

I agree, get a good machine. My Sister-in-law is a "pro seamstress" and has a top of the line Bernia. She says it would sew the headliner no problem. hahah I gave her a sample of the construction and the the poor machine stopped dead in the water on the second stitch and bent the needle 90 deg.

Dan here will recommend the good deal.

That E-bay listing has expired, so I don't know what machine you were looking at.
