What is that shiny tank...

What is that shiny tank that is usually placed up front of the radiator on some 30's ford hot rods?

I guess is not a fuel tank or is it?

Yep, it's a front mount fuel tank. Or the ones i have seen are anyway "OLD SCHOOL"

In the old days we called them pressure tanks. Some you actually pumped them up like a gas lantern to pressurise it and make your run down the strip.

The idea was to force the fuel back towards the engine on dragsters, etc. w/quick acceleration, plus better weight distrubution. Makes for a poor bumper, though!

You will sometimes still hear these tanks referred to as "Moon tanks", so called because Jerry Moon sold them early on. The company logo was those 'Moon Eyes' that I'm sure you've seen before. He also made the "Moon Discs" wheel covers and other assorted hot rod parts back when.

The 'Moon Equipped' decals were very popular years ago.

so it's a racing gizmo, I wouldn't feel comfortable running a tank full of gas up front on the wild streets...

'come on my dear american friends, you guys don't even wash parts with gasoline but you carry it as bumpers.. lol.

looks very cool though.

They're still available- http://www.mooneyesusa.com/shop/index.php?cPath=188_128

I found the original 'Moon Equipped' logo above to replace the 'Moon' logo. I like it better. ;)

Mostly those front mounted Moon tanks are used for looks or for a radiator over flow. They are old school, kinda neat, quite expensive these days, but do "make a statement" for those that like that kind of stuff. For me - my back bumper is next to my gas tank, <2" as it's a '32 style tank on my '31

Hmmmm - gives me an idea. Nahhhhh

But - take a look here: http://www.honestcharley.com/hot-rod...-tank-3qt.html

hey they have pretty neat stuff at mooneyes, I love the variety of tanks, about the decals I'm gonna print their logo on adhesive vinyl but please don't tell anybody :D

it's kind of difficult and expensive buying parts from the USA in this shores but definitely I want one of those fuel tanks for my buggy.
