You are going to need to give more details.

Is it computerized?

If not the distributor curve dictates what the initial timing should be.

its not computerized.It has a hei distributor.I was told it should be between 8-14*.I have it set at 8* right now.

Use your timing light and find out how much distributor advance there is.
