What are some ideas to make good torque in a 350

I have a 350 non vortec I was wanting to make more torque then horsepower so my plans were a 383 with vortec heads and the tbi intake to make it work I'd like to run on regular gas from the pump and I'll have a chip burned when I'm done the motor will be in a lifted 92 chevy 4x4 1500 on 35in tires with3.73 gears and I might go to 37s any ideas thank?

Take a look at the HT383 crate motor and build a clone of it. If you want more emphasis on TQ below 4000 RPM keep your current "junk" swirl port TBI heads and clean the ports up a little but leave the ramp in the intake port alone. The Vortec heads give up some TQ to the "junk" heads below 4,000 but from there up there is no comparison. I've been told by someone that has built a lot of engines for full size trucks and vans that the GM '395 roller cam used in the HT383, Ramjet 350 and 305 & 350 marine engines works REALLY well with the TBI heads and will extend the usable RPM to about 5,000 with excellent off idle TQ and response. A lot of people swap on the L98 iron heads from the 350 TPI cars but they hurt low end TQ over the TBI heads and don't do anything even close to as well as the Vortec heads. A decent "in between" head for a 350 would be the L30 305 Vortec heads. They work a lot better than most people like to believe. You'd probably want to install 1.94 intake valves though as they come with 1.84 intakes and open up the chamber around the intake valve.

I'm usually on the conservative side on my builds, I'm more of an off idle and low end proponent when it comes to trucks. Most people want more on the top end SO if you're looking for more top end then go with the Vortec heads but the '395 cam is still a lot better than it looks on paper and would serve you well.

If you want big truck torque I would build a TPI 383. 10:1 cr
Ported 170cc conventional port high velocity heads 2.02x 1.60's long tube headers and dual 2.5" exhaust.
Stock TPI intake manifold with a clean up.
A mild hyd roller like the ramjet cam.

This upgraded unleashed TPI motor will make a ton more torque and power than stock, and right where you need it.

If you are going to run large diameter tires then up the gears perportionally or it will be a slug.
Takes gear ratio and torque multiplication to get a truck going.
Big tires need big gears.

If using 37" tall tires and a Th700r4 OD trans use a 5.57:1 gear.

Likewise if you go with a 35" tire use a 5.13 gear.

Make up your mind as they need a different gear ratio.

TBI sucks compared to the camaro corvette TPI system. Those long folded TPI intake runners make big low/mid torque.

torquey 350

I built a 383 for my malibu wagon, I used flat tops and 64cc Alum heads for 11-1 comp. Comp Cams XE268. 400HP@5200 and 460Lbs@4300, made at least 400lbs from 2500 to past 5000. made good power to 6000 but lost a few HP, runs fine on super. I am also building a 350 for my boat and will be using the RamJet cam in a Gm Perf Parts L-31 short block. I am using a set of Pro Comp 190cc heads, I went with aluminum because they save a good bit of weight and will let me run higher comp. I had the heads milled to 60cc for a roughly 9.9-1 comp. ratio. I know the runner size is a little big for a torque motor, but that was the size available and they are inexpensive. Anyone used this combo?

I have a 355 in it now and I'm happy with that but it's getting wore out and yes hippies right I'd like to keep my power in the road rpms like when I'm cruise down the interstate I'm at bout 2000rpm so I'd like to keep it in my rpm range I don't like to go over 4000 so any ideas my gears are fine I can spin my tires through second with no problem
