What speacialty tools will I need to rebuild a 97 GMC 305
Hello hot rodders, i'm new on this blog. I am about to enter into a bonding project with my 19 yr old grandson. We are going to attempt to rebuild his 1997 Gmc sierra pick up truck engine. I have rebuilt a few when I was in my 20's I am now in my 50's and need to brush up a little. I need to start by finding out what tools I will need before we get into this. and if anything has changed in a rebuild from the 70's and 80's to now. Any help and suggestions are welcome. Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you all.
It's mostly the same, a few changes to look for, is the engine internally balanced or externally, is the rear seal a one piece, or two piece?
The tools needed are piston groove cleaner, ridge reamer, cylinder hone to deglaze the cylinder, ring compressor when you put in the pistons and a torque wrench
Thanks Mhernandez for the info. we are well into the project. we just got the block back from the shop had them press in the new cam bearings. We are putting in a 270 cam and a double roller timimng chain. had to buy a new crank, the crank that came out was shot. will have to replace one rod. It was out of round. the rest of them were in great shape. Waiting for the heads to come back from shop and we will be ready to complete assembly and install it in his truck. Was great to get back at engine building but more than that was great to spend quality time with my grandson that was worth more than anything.
