What is Stock Deck Height?

This may be a very dumb question, but what is the deck height on a stock motor. For example, I have a 97 350 Chevy Vortec block that came out of a pickup. The pistons are already out of the motor, so there is no way to measure. Just curious because if i wanted to compute compression i need to know chamber volume, piston volume, gasket volume, Deck Height, etc. Thanks to anyone who can help with this question.

No, I didnt mean compression. I meant like what is the deck height in inches. Does that make sense? .10, .20, .30? What is the optimum deck height that you want to achieve. I dont think deck height has anything to do with whether your piston is domed, dished, or flat, or your chamber volume, or any of those things right? Please, enlighten me.

Deck Height: The distance from centerline of crank to the face the heads bolts(deck) to. 9.0"

Compression height. The distance from top of piston crown to centerline of piston pin. 1.56"

OK, gotcha. Thanx. Another quick question. How do you figure for CC volume when basing it off of compressed gasket thickness. Say like .028 thickness on a Chevy 350. I read somewhere like a gasket with .041 made 9.1 CC's of volume.

That's mostly dependant on how much the gasket will compress. You can go to www.felpro.com and get all you need.

Figure the volume the same as you would figure a cyl. volume

It's just a really short cyl.

Geometery.

Volume of a cylinder.

pi * radius˛ * height = Volume

3.14 * 4˛ * .028 = V
3.14 * 16 * .028 = 1.40672ci

Now, Cubic Inches to Cubic Centimeters.

1 cubic inches = 16.387064 cubic centimeters

1.40672 * 16.387064 = 23.05201067008cc
Or simply, 23cc's.

Although .028" Head gasket is kinda small.

4" is the bore diameter. Radius is half the diameter. The GM .028" gaskets have a 4.1" bore diameter, so:

3.1416 x 2.05" x 2.05" x 0.028" x 16.4cc/ci = 6.06cc
