Hi,
I am still only in the planning stages for building my 1929 Chevy truck, but already I need help... It came with a straight 6, but that engine will never handle more hp reliably, so I want to put in another engine and transmission. Now I first considered the good old 250, or a 292. But I also found the LL8 an interesting engine, as it has 4 valves per cylinder. The final engine will get a carb and if necessary home made manyfolds. But when thinking about the LL8, which is hard to come by and has variable timing on the exhaust came, and I have no way of controlling that, I started thinking in a different direction. What do I want, regardless of make? Here we go:
- Straight 6
- 24 valve (no, not per cylinder, in total).
- No electronic gizmos that cannot be replaced by carb.
- Preferably cross-flow (which is almost mandarory when 24 valve).
- Preferably with a mechanical spark distributor.
- Preferably large (300+ ci?) displacement.
- Widely available and therefore dirt cheap.
- Easily matched to a similarly widely available transmission.
- Imperial fasteners.
- Lightweight alloy would be a bonus.
So, yes, I did leave out the Chevy make. I am not against it, but it is no longer a requirement. I once fitted a Honda B16 engine to a Mini, machined the HONDA letters off the valve covers and brazed AUSTIN letters on them. Looked very nice.
Anywho, I am open to suggestions, as you may have guessed by now.
Cheers,
Hugo
