What is this stuff??

Hi Guys -

I sandblasted some parts from a donor car (front cowl pieces and rocker pieces). Most of the parts had some pretty deep pitting, but cleaned up nicely. However, there is some black "crud" still on the parts. The stuff seems to be unaffected by the sandblast and is really, really hard. I can't even scratch it with an awl.

I'm assuming this is rust, but I've never seen anything like it. Should I run some naval jelly (I think that is the name of the stuff, the pink stuff ) over these parts before putting 2k epoxy on it?

Any help is appreciated!

Joe

I was going to take pictures of it last night, but I had to go to the town board meeting. Some fool wants to put an asphault plant in my back yard.

Using the naval jelly on clean steel doesn't have any adverse affects does it? I've never actually used the stuff before.

Thanks for the help!

It's rust.

Bead blasting doesn't work real well on this kind of heavy rust. You need some aluminum oxide or crushed glass to blast that kind of rust off.

Or, hit it with a wire wheel after using naval jelly. Do this combo over and over until it is gone. It may take many iterations.

Put your wire wheel on a drill that reverses direction and reverse it often. The wire wheel is more effective this way.

modas, i don't know what you are working on, but that black stuff maybe old timy under coating. sand blasting doesn't have any affect on it. your best bet is the same as with heavy rust. a wire brush and time, it will come off.
a brush on a small grinder works best. good luck.
