what are the symptoms of having the wrong #1 cylinder

I have a 350 chevy engine which I suspect has a messed up firing order

the engine starts and runs, yet i can't adjust the timing right and my mpg is horrible, like 2 mpg, even withtimign advanced all the way to the point where i get the best throttle response the exhaust reeks of unburned fuel and smokes white when i rev it(not steam or coolant)

i have the correct firing sequence on the cap 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, i think i might have the wrong #1 cylinder marked down

can anyone help me out
