I run about half an inch deflection along the long side, cold.

A better way is about 1/2 inch when hot on the long side , especially with aluminum heads. I need at least an inch cold. Even more when really cold like 20 deg.

I run a 8mm metric belt and generally run it even more snug when hot. It cuts down the noise a bit and doesn't seem to wear the pulleys as much. I have over 9000 miles on it this year already. I adjusted it at about 1000 miles and haven't done a thing to it since.

In industy we ran the very same belts much tighter. After all they are very precision timing belts. Running them loose causes slop in the timing events.
