Can the polyester primers be shot over old paint and are there any types of paint it would eat (such older, non-two-part paints).

Polyester primer can be applied over any type of paint. It must be sanded first. 320 grit is what is recomended with Slick Sand.

You can apply a polyester over oem finishes and any catalyzed primer or topcoat and bare metal, bodyfiller, fiberglass, smc, and carbon fiber. Epoxy is the ideal undercoat for polyester products. They can also go over laquer products with great care, light coats to avoid saturating the laquer-but this can set you up for failure if you put a laquer type product or anything with a high amount of solvent over the polyester. This situation would be the same as doing regular bodyfiller work over laquer or sandwiching it in between. Best off not using any laquer products at all.

You can bet most of the best high quality rod shops are big users of polyester primers. And the TV show shops I guarantee are using mostly polyester to turn out the jobs in short time.
